Alginates
Alginates - such as Gaviscon Original – are reflux suppressants. They work with the body by forming a thick layer on top of the stomach contents which prevents the acid rising into the oesophagus (food pipe). They tend to work very quickly and have a soothing effect, offering relief for up to four hours.
The active ingredients can include sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate.
Gaviscon Original has a soothing effect, lasting for up to four hours. It is available as a liquid (aniseed or peppermint flavour) or tablets (lemon or peppermint flavour). Suitable for use in pregnancy.
