Understanding Heartburn
What I should do about it
In the short term, many cases of heartburn (acid reflux) can be treated by remedies bought from your local supermarket or pharmacy. There are four main types available: alginates, antacids, H2 receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Check out our treatment advisor to find out which might be most suitable for you.
However, if you find you are repeatedly suffering, it is probably worth trying to establish the cause and make any appropriate lifestyle or dietary changes such as:
- Keep your weight in check.
- Eat smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.
- Don't eat late, or on the run.
- Sleep with your upper body slightly elevated, perhaps propped up slightly with pillows.
- Avoid spicy, acidic and fatty food.
- Cut down on alcohol, caffeine and very hot drinks.
- Don't smoke.
- Relax - stress can cause digestive slow down.
- Avoid any known triggers.
If, after making such changes, you continue to suffer regularly (e.g. on a weekly basis), or in case of any doubt, you should consult your GP.
