Understanding Indigestion
Introduction
Indigestion is the collective term used to describe a number of digestive symptoms. These tend to be relatively mild but include pain/discomfort in the upper part of the stomach, sickness and nausea and an uncomfortable bloated feeling.
According to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence 40% of adults suffer from indigestion every year and most people will suffer at some point in their lives.
Symptoms
Indigestion usually (but not always) occurs after eating or drinking. A pain in the top of the stomach is the most common symptom, however many people complain of feeling 'bloated' or uncomfortably full and gaseous - needing to burp, belch or pass wind a lot. There may also be nausea or vomiting and a loss of appetite.
Such symptoms can however indicate a problem elsewhere in the digestive tract. If you find you are suffering regularly or have any concerns consult your GP.
